Record crowds show respect a century on Continued from page 1. More than 6000 people turned up to services across Marlborough, with many people attending more than one. Blenheim saw record numbers, as did Picton and Renwick. Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman congratulated people for their tremendous turnout. Renwick RSA president Anthony van de Water at Saturday’s service. He says while Gallipoli was not a successful campaign, it was a privilege. “It is an honour to give thanks for the service given and the lives sacrificed. “It is an anniversary we have come to commemorate, not as a military triumph, but more a triumph of human spirit in the face of terrible times.” Sowman says Marlburians were keen to do their part for the war effort. “When 30 men were called from Marlborough, 76 stepped forward.” He described Kiwi deaths as “New Zealand’s lost generation”. Marlborough RSA president John Forrest says the men were deprived of things in life now taken for granted, like marriage, children and grandchildren. “They were denied what every person who serves beyond our shores desires most, to return to the life of these much blessed islands.” Royal Australian Air Force flight lieutenant, Steven Heriban says he was heartened by the amount of younger generations who showed their respect. He says it was the sacrifice of those soldiers which had allowed young people to enjoy the freedoms they have today. More than 4000 people applauded the parade of veterans and military as they arrived and departed the ceremony. Muzzleloaders get helping hand By Adam Poulopoulos February’s Onamalutu fire incinerated the Marlborough Muzzleloaders Club’s lawn mower, but some community generosity is helping them to replace it. The Blue Door have donated the club $1500 to help replace the lawn mower. The ride-on mower was sitting at the end of the club’s shooting range, on Northbank Road, when the fire struck. After the fire Muzzleloaders president Selwyn Law made an application for funding to the Blue Door, as the club is not covered by third-party insurance. He says the mower is important because the bullets fired on the range have a patch of cloth around them, which can smoulder and catch fire if the grass is too long. He says the club is grateful for The Blue Door’s assistance, but the search for a second-hand mower has not been successful yet. “We’re looking on Trade Me and by word-of-mouth. We’ve got nothing specific in mind yet. “If someone knows of any mowers
available let us know. That would be wonderful.” He says the mower had been built up by club members. “In the end it was a really good mower after a lot of work from our club members. “There’s a very talented lot of engineers out there.” Trees on the range were burned, and the butts, a backstop made of tyres, was also affected. Law says the damage could have been worse still. “Our clubrooms survived. Everything on the range was burned apart from the building. “It was a great save from the helicopters and rural fire. They came and doused the building down. “It was to the extent that flaxes on the tin of the building burned but the building didn’t.” The Blue Door’s donation is part of the $24,750 in approved grants they are giving this year. MDC wins innovation award By Jacob Page Marlborough District Council’s building control team and the lead it has taken in using information technology has won it national recognition for innovation. At the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand, the Council received the Carter Holt Harvey Innovator of the Year Award. The award recognises a building control professional or team working in building control activities who has demonstrated commitment to innovation in
engineering. The MDC’s success in developing and successfully using new technology to increase efficiency clinched the award. MDC has created a new mobile building inspection solution which allows its building inspectors to complete digital building consent inspections. All the necessary information from the relevant building consent can be downloaded to a building inspector’s device so there is no need to take physical files out
in the field and inspectors no longer need to spend time writing up field notes after inspections because automated updates can be fed into the council systems. It has enabled the council to speed up the turnaround time for customers needing a building inspection and it means all inspection data and photographs can be made available immediately to customers. MDC building control group leader Bill East says the system has been well accepted by the
local construction industry and building owners and was working very smoothly with council’s new on-line applications system introduced at the beginning of this month. MDC chief executive Andrew Besley says this latest award confirms that, inside local government, the Marlborough District Council has led the way in the use of technology to benefit the region and it is very satisfying to see this recognised by a national body like BOINZ.

WET WEATHER WELCOME Marlborough is in the midst of some decent rainfall for the first time in months. Blenheim received 18.2mm of rain on Monday, according to Metservice and received more yesterday. The fine weather is set to return for the remainder of the working week but temperatures will remain cool as winter approaches.
LUCKY ESCAPE Two men were admitted to Wairau Hospital with minor head injuries after a motor vehicle accident on Monday. The incident occurred at Weld Pass shortly before 4pm. The men, 28 and 27, have since been discharged.
CONSTRUCTION TO COMMENCE Work on the new Countdown building in Redwoodtown is due to begin shortly. Redwood Development Ltd chairman of directors Paul Ham says work on the building will start at the end of next month.

Government back recycling Blenheim’s new recycling facility will be receiving Government funding, with environment minister Nick Smith announcing the grant during a visit on Friday. The government is providing $776,000 for the Commercial Industrial Sorting Facility, which will sit on the current Blenheim Transfer Station site on Wither Road. The funds have been taken from the government’s Waste Management Fund. The $2.95 million facility is due to start operating in October next year. The Marlborough District
Council hope the facility will divert material from the landfill. Smith says the facility will take Marlborough to the cutting-edge of waste management in New Zealand. “Marlborough is important to New Zealand’s clean, green brand, being the main home of our wine and mussel exports, and a popular tourism destination with the stunning Marlborough Sounds. “However, the region’s current management of waste needs to be stepped up. I commend the Marlborough council on this initiative,
which will place it at the forefront of better waste management in New Zealand.” He says he hopes Marlborough pushing the boundaries will encourage other similar areas to step up in the same way. The sorting facility is projected to take approximately 13,000 tonnes of waste per annum and successfully divert 60 per cent of this for recycling. The recycled materials to be recovered include cardboard, plastics, metal, glass, plasterboard, brick, rubble, wood, textiles and soil.
Work continues on World War Two camp By Adam Poulopoulos The journey to convert The old Air Training Corps buildings at Omaka into a working World War Two military camp has begun. Historical preservation group The Garrison Society took possession of the derelict buildings in November, and have been fixing them up ever since. Plumbing has been repaired in the buildings, windows have been fixed and wiring for about 60 per cent of the building has been completed. Soon, the society will be receiving several old huts from Dip Flat, the Royal New Zealand Air Force training facility in the Wairau Valley. The huts will be set up facing each other with a walkway in the middle to emulate how they were arranged in wartime.

The group also housed jeeps, trucks and other vehicles for the Easter Air Show, while many society members spent the weekend camping in the buildings. When complete, the working camp will be the only one of its kind in the country. It will contain a museum wing, workshop, functions lounge and more. No date has been set for completion. A Givealittle page, titled ‘Garrison HQ restoration’ has been set up, raising funds to replace old weatherboards.

Omaka Marae call for new members The fire has officially been relit and is once again burning brightly at the Omaka Marae Maori Women’s League in Blenheim. A highly anticipated visit by the President of the National Maori Women’s Welfare League recently was a welcome opportunity for the league to share past and future events. The energy, drive and passion of a newly invigorated membership, many of whom signed up through their involvement with the Omaka Marae Kapa Haka group, combined with the guidance of founding
members, has already resulted in a number of successful initiatives. These include the popular “Frozen” Outdoor Movie Night fundraiser, the Tiki Lounge at the Sweet-Az Sun Festival on Waitangi Day and the launch of Pa Kids, a marae-based kaupapa Maori programme which nurtures cultural identity. Ongoing activity includes the Maorithoners, a training group whose first event will be the St Clair Half Marathon. There are plans for another outdoor movie night, a Pa Kids fundraiser is already in motion and a ball/awards evening has
also been proposed. League president Tineka Smith says she hopes other like-minded women will be inspired to join the organisation. “We are driven to do good things, with good outcomes for lots of different people, firstly within our own whanau and in the wider community as well.” The Omaka Marae Maori Women’s League meets at Omaka Marae in the Blue Room at 6.00pm on the first Monday of the month. Free dropping 1080 in the Kaikouras where there are naturally occurring low numbers of possums. I recall some years ago, 1080 being aerially dropped for possums near St Arnaud. Survey lines before the drop showed results like no possums or very few. Mr Parker is quite right. He raised an interesting point about DOC prosecuting Tb-Free for “knowingly killing native wild life.” I am concerned at the pointlessness of it all too. If 1080 kills birds and insects as “1080 was initially an insecticide” as Mr Parker says, well what is going on. What a waste of wildlife and public money. Frank Henry. Dear Ed, Re your article from last week, do these current Councillors like having their heads patted and being tickled under the chin so much that they do not evaluate the work of Kobus Mentz before using him again. An analysis of the Grow Marlborough document would see that large portions had to be discarded or have not been implemented (remember liquefaction has been around for millions of years). The people of Seddon are being asked to bare the lions share for the water upgrade; surely those who benefit most from Kobus’s latest plan should pay the lions share for similar benefits. The council’s must distinguish between must haves and would like to haves. It is more important to have safe drinking water in Seddon than it is to have a second (third) theatre, a second library and a third art gallery. What would Councils level of culpability(if something bad happened) be for knowing supplying dangerous water to its residents while undertaking grandiose plans and edifices that benefit only a few selected privileged groups and individuals. Music mission Singer/songwriter Mel Parsons initially turned heads in Marlborough pulling double duty in a comedy show and then as a solo musician. She talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about cold calling her idol, getting Anika Moa to take a backseat and why bars and clubs just aren’t her thing. Mel Parsons rarely slows down. As an independent musician who made waves at the top of the South Island, she is hands on with most aspects of her career. From advertising to interviews to actually performing, she plays a part in all of it. It’s that work ethic that won her friends in Marlborough in 2012 and now one of the region’s most recognized wineries, Allan Scott, is helping her get through a 23-show national tour in a month to promote her third album Drylands. Mel says playing a national tour allows her to play in all different types of venues. “It’s always interesting…Sometimes we walk out and think that was a bit tougher to perform in than we thought.” Mel says the smaller venues help her connect with people. She says she enjoys being an independent performer and accepts the way people listen to music is constantly evolving. “Because I don’t have that pop Top 40 type of sound and it’s more folk-grassroots, you have to try to make it on your own. “I wouldn’t change anything, it’s been a great journey so far.” Mel managed to get one of her idols, Canadian
singer/songwriter Ron Sexsmith to be part of the album simply by plucking up the courage to email him. “I was nervous because I really respected him but I thought to myself the worst that could happen was that he’d say no. “However, he was very gracious and it was great.” She also has well-known Kiwi artist Anika Moa as a backup vocalist on the album. “It’s hard to push her into the back-
ground because everyone knows her as this very forward front person in her own right, “We are really good friends and we’ve worked together in the past.” Mel says performing so many shows so quickly is second nature to her. “It’s like anything you train those muscles to a certain point. “I won’t go in a noisy bar or anywhere that I need to shout to be heard just so it’s easier on my voice. “I’ll have a couple of glasses of Allan
Scott wine and that’s enough of the alcohol too.” Mel is a qualified ski instructor, does stand-up comedy and has dabbled in equestrian and rugby. She says a break for her is working from home. “Maybe once I’ve finished all this touring I’ll find a nice, tropical island and just disconnect from the world for a while.”

Lest we forget The Gallipoli Campaign was fought by allied forces from New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain (including Ireland), Newfoundland, France and India, against the Turkish ‘Ottoman’ forces. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) began landing just before dawn on April 25 1915 at Anzac Cove, and engaged the Turkish defenders on inland ridges. By the end of the day, more than 16,000 Australians and
New Zealanders were ashore. The Anzac plan had been to swiftly move across the Gallipoli Peninsula and capture the Straits of the Dardanelles. Approximately 14,000 New Zealanders and 50,000 Australians served at Gallipoli. By the end of the eight-month campaign, 2,779 New Zealanders and 8,709 Australians had died with thousands more being casualties.

Marlborough’s 100-Day Tribute to 100-Year Anniversary of Gallipoli Friday 24 April was the last night that the sound of the cornet rang out the Last Post from the steps of Blenheim’s war memorial at 6pm as the special 100-year tribute to Marlborough’s fallen servicemen reached its 100th day. Blenheim bandsman Denis Teeling has played the notes each night in the brief ceremony at which the names of Marlborough casualties are read aloud. Numbers have continued to build since the first evening and the ceremonies have brought visitors from Tauranga, Hamilton, Wanganui and Christchurch who have made the trip to hear the names of family members recalled. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman who has been present several times each week, says it was an original concept that has captured the interest of, not only the direct families, but the
wider public and visitors to Blenheim. The gesture by one man has grown into an evening ceremony drawing hundreds of people; families, descendants, visitors, school children. “Denis has created Marlborough’s own special opportunity to mark the 100 years since Gallipoli in our own original way and he has shown great commitment to come out for 100 consecutive evenings,” said Mr Sowman. “Even more importantly, Denis has achieved what he set out to do; acknowledge that each and every one of our casualties were individuals who were lost to our province.” Marlborough RSA President John Forrest says there had been some very touching moments; the woman from Hamilton who was three months old when her father was killed, who travelled down for the ceremony, and
the little family reunions that have occurred as various relations have gathered to hear a family member’s name read out. Family stories and family connections discovered were being re-discovered as a result of the event, he said. Each night, the Ode was read after the names and a poppy pinned onto the cenotaph to represent each serviceman. Blenheim kapa haka group Te Rerenga o Te Ra, lead by tutor Nan Kahu, attended every night. Their performance added greatly to the atmosphere of the very moving ceremony The last night, Friday 24th April, the night before ANZAC Day, the names of the last seven servicemen, W to Y, were read out. Defence and diplomatic dignitaries in Marlborough for the ANZAC Day ceremony were in attendance.

Pregnant mothers are encouraged to get vaccinated against whooping cough and influenza to protect mother and baby, says Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s Associate Director of Midwifery, Debbie Fisher. Mrs Fisher, who is 34 weeks pregnant with her first baby, says; “I want to do everything I can to protect our babies and mothers. “Our babies are precious, and as a mother, I want to make sure that every mother who is carrying their unborn child gets this message to get vaccinated and know that it’s free.” “Getting vaccinated against flu and whooping cough will protect mother and her baby in the first weeks of life, and it is is free for pregnant mothers. Vaccinating against these contagious illnesses also helps stop the spread of influenza and whooping cough in the

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the New Zealand Ministry of Health recommends that pregnant women should be given the highest priority in the seasonal influenza vaccination programme, due to additional risks for pregnant women if they contract influenza during pregnancy. This year’s flu vaccine covers two new strains that were not in last year’s vaccine. Pregnant women who get the flu during pregnancy are 18 times more likely to end up in hospital due to pregnancy complications, Debbie says. To get vaccinated against whooping cough and influenza, pregnant mothers and their families can talk to your midwife or GP to make an appointment to get both vaccines at no cost.

Whitehaven Vineyard Manager Whitehaven is a family-owned Marlborough winery, producing quality regional wine. An opportunity currently exists for a Vineyard Manager, responsible for the company vineyard located near Rapaura Road and a managed vineyard in Renwick. Future expansion of the vineyard area is likely. Reporting to the Viticulturist and working in with a small, dedicated team, this role is hands-on and varied. We all use roads and most of us use them in different ways: often a mix of walking, cycling, driving, riding, catching the bus or train, or even skating or running. Drivers have a responsibility to protect other road users when they’re operating their vehicle, a machine that can kill or

Here are some tips to avoid getting into an accident while it’s raining. • Keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times. Keep all distractions, such as cell phones or even the radio, off and away from you. • Turn on your headlights. This will make it easier for you to see what is in front of you. • Drive at or below the speed limit to the extent that you are comfortable with, and can see far enough in front of you to appropriately make driving decisions. • Be aware of hydroplaning. This is where your vehicle travels
on top of the water and has NO or very little contact with the ground. To safely get out of a hydroplaning situation let off the gas and steer straight or slightly in the direction you must go. Do not make sudden motions and remain calm. • Avoid flooded roads. Never drive through standing or flowing water in a road way unless you have no choice or you are able to follow someone else to judge the depth of the water. • Turn on the defroster if the windshield begins to fog. In hot, muggy weather, air conditioned air (which cannot contain as much moisture) will usually clear the inside of the windshield faster than non air conditioned.

Paddon and Kennard crash into spectators Sport By Jacob Page Hayden Paddon and Blenheim’s John Kennard had a frightening crash during their 16th place effort at the World Rally Championship’s Rally of Argentina at the weekend. Near the start of stage nine, on Saturday, a small kicker jump caused Paddon’s car to land on its side on two wheels close to the edge of the road. Neither Paddon or Kennard were injured in the incident, however six spectators were injured and received immediate medical attention at the scene, following the officials’ halting of this stage. “It wasn’t a nice incident. Our best wishes go out to everyone who was involved.” While the Kiwi duo managed top-five quickest stage times at various points during the weekend, they were unable to stay out of trouble on either of the first two days. “It was obviously a difficult day, but good to get back in the car and get some miles, and try to build on some confidence again,” Paddon says. “Obviously it’s a short day with just two stages, so today it was just important to bring the car home which we’ve done and now we can try and Hayden Paddon and Blenheim's John Kennard had plenty of challenges during their look forward to Portugal.” Rally of Argentina efforts at the weekend.

During his racing career he was trained by the Morrisons good friends Carla and Robbie Holmes from North Canterbury. Shirley says when Christen Fire raced at Blenheim we would stable him and I considered him to be a very good racehorse.

Employees from the four companies, and those not affiliated with a company, were all present. The event was held to celebrate the end of the harvest season. The day included threelegged races, water bomb relays and cheerleading displays. Grapeworx Marlborough owner Susy Pouwhare says
after the success of last year’s inaugural event, organisers decided to make it a yearly occasion. She says late-April is a good time to host the event. “A lot of them came in November and go home in a week’s time, and a lot have arrived recently and are staying for the winter season.” More photos on page 13.
